Since it started more heavily scrutinizing pickup trucks, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been a thorn in the side of every pickup manufacturer, as they regularly met only the minimum safety standards. In general, pickups lacked anything but the minimum required safety equipment while passenger cars and crossovers gained new advanced safety features like automatic emergency braking and more.
Recently, pickup manufacturers have turned their focus to adding more safety gadgets to their cargo-friendly models, but they still failed to reach the Top Safety Pick+ level our Jacksonville area shoppers seek. At least until today, as the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab and select 2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab models became the first-ever pickups to earn the Top Safety Pick+ distinction from the IIHS.
First, with its rigid platform and well-placed crumple zones, the Ram 1500 Crew Cab earned the required “Good” ratings in all six IIHS crash tests. While this keeps you safe in a collision, the IIHS also considers how well a vehicle prevents a collision, which is where the headlight and front-crash-prevention tests come in to play. The Ram 1500 aced these tests too with the right options installed.
To earn the “Good” rating in the headlight test, you must opt for the Laramie Longhorn or Laredo model with the adaptive LED projector headlights. The “Superior” rating in the front-crash-prevention test comes only with the available Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus feature included in the optional Advanced Safety Group package.
