Seek Adventure: 2019 Cherokee vs 2019 Grand Cherokee

By Emily Eppley | October 1st, 2018

No matter which Jeep model you choose, you get an iconically styled vehicle built for adventure. The 2019 Jeep Cherokee and 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee are no exception to this expectation, but which of these SUVs is right for you? The Grand Cherokee lives up to its regal title, but do you need all the extra bells and whistles?

See the differences between the 2019 Grand Cherokee and 2019 Cherokee, and explore which might be better for you.

Exterior

From the classic seven-slot grille to the new and improved headlights, the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee have refined and unmistakable style. They are angular without being boxy and traditional without feeling stale, it’s a tough line to tread, but Jeep does it well.

The 2019 Grand Cherokee is the larger of the two, which translates to more cargo space and roomier seating in the second row. At 189 inches long, 68 inches wide, and 69 inches tall, the Grand Cherokee seamlessly transitions from the carpool lane to your weekend adventure thanks to its ample cargo room to store your bags.

You can also change the exterior of your Grand Cherokee to match your unique style with available packages like the Mopar Chrome Edition and Mopar Exterior Appearance Groups. You’ll have a more mature and sophisticated look on your adventure vehicle.

The 2019 Cherokee’s smaller dimensions allow you to maneuver around town easier and fit into smaller parking spots. The base model starts at 182 inches long, 73.2 inches wide, and 66.2 inches tall — the Trailhawk model adds about 2 inches to the width and height.

Make your Jeep Cherokee look more like a prowler than a crossover with the Altitude package. It blacks out the center cap on the grille as well as the wheels for a youthful and urban look.

Interior

The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee’s interiors are built for adventure. You’ll enjoy supple leather on the higher trims, available navigation, and enough space to bring along everyone and their gear for the journey. Plus, with accessories like all-weather floor mats, you can easily keep these SUVs clean after an afternoon on the trails.

While both have seating for five in two rows of seats, the Cherokee offers slightly more legroom in the second row at 40.3 inches to the Grand Cherokee’s 38.6 inches. Up front, they’re within an inch of each other with the Cherokee at 41.1 inches of legroom and the Grand Cherokee at 40.3 inches.

When it comes to luxury and craftsmanship, the Grand Cherokee elevates itself. Bright metal trim surrounds the polished open-pore wood interior inlays for a refined and sophisticated atmosphere that makes this SUV feel more mature than the Cherokee. The ambient lighting increases the ambiance and makes it easier to see the door handles and footwells at night.

Despite being more modest in scale, the 2019 Cherokee offers plenty of space to  bring along your gear for adventure. Behind the upright second row, the Cherokee has 25.8 square feet of cargo room. By folding the rear seats flat, you expose 54.9 cubes of space. By contrast, the 2019 Grand Cherokee delivers 36.3 square cubic feet behind the upright second row and you can grow that to 68.3 cubic feet when you fold the seats down.

Performance

You can get a trail-rated trim on both models, but the Grand Cherokee has the heftier engines. It starts with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that delivers 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. You can bump up to the available 5.7-liter V-8 engine that packs 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque that helps this SUV achieve a best-in-class towing capacity of 7,200 pounds. Both engines pair to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Want raw power? The Grand Cherokee is happy to oblige with its SRT trim that boasts a 6.4-liter V-8 engine that delivers 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Serious power buffs will enjoy the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk — the most powerful and quickest SUV ever, with its 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine rated at 707 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque.

Or if you want to try ditching conventional fuel, try the 3.0-liter Ecodiesel engine for ample torque and better fuel economy. This V-6 engine earned 22 mpg city and 30 mpg highway in 2018, and with no significant changes expected, this engine till likely deliver the same great mileage. Plus, this engine delivers 240 horsepower and a whopping 420 pound-feet of torque to get you off the line in a hurry.

The Cherokee holds its own with its three available engines and a silky smooth nine-speed transmission. The base engine is a 2.4-liter inline-four that pumps out 180 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque while delivering 22 mpg city and 31 highway. Opt for the all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated for 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

But if you’re looking for class-leading V-6 fuel economy on your commute from Orange Park to Fleming Island, upgrade to the Cherokee Trailhawk and its 3.2-liter engine that delivers 271 horsepower while getting up to 20 mpg city and 29 highway.
